Kismet the Cat Beat Kidney Disease, Brings Good Karma for FL Brewery

March 26, 2022

In October 2020, Sara and Charles, the Coastal Karma Brewing Company owners in Lake Park, Florida, rescued Kismet. The company’s name comes from its beach location and Karma, “the belief in helping others will in return enrich and improve your life,” their website states.

At the time, the stray cat, estimated at 7-years-old, had numerous health problems. However, Kismet beat the odds after finding a forever home at the taproom.

“He’s [was] missing a lot of teeth, he was pretty beat up, really underweight, had a lot of health issues going on,” Sara told WPTV News.

“We took him to the vet, and they diagnosed him with stage-four kidney disease,” said Charles.

Kismet Beats Kidney Disease

Following the diagnosis, the vets expected the condition to worsen, and Kismet would not live much longer. According to the brewery’s Facebook post from May 2021, the vet told Sara that Kismet’s disease was in the “final stage,” and he needed IV fluids three times a week. So, the cat stayed at home, unable to return to the taproom in his weakened condition.

Then, after a month, Kismet’s health began to remarkably improve.

“He’s doing better every day and can’t wait to give you some love!” they shared, and Kismet was back at the brewery to meet his many fans.

After five months, Kismet returned to the vet, and to everyone’s surprise, his kidneys were functioning normally.

“Five months later, we took him to the vet. They wanted to run his numbers again on his kidneys to see how they were doing to modify the program that we had him on, and he came back with normal kidney function,” Charles said.

Following recovery from kidney disease, the cat then developed a mild skin condition. To prevent him from licking his sensitive skin, he needed to wear a shirt.

“He would lick until he would bleed. We would come in and he would have bare arms,” Sarah explained. “So, we have to put these long-sleeved shirts on him.”

Then, Kismet improved again, no longer requiring his “adorable pajamas that everybody loves,” as she put it.

As Kismet began enjoying renewed health and a forever home at the brewery, he became a new kitty, playful and happy.

“It’s almost like since he found out he had normal kidney function he’s been more playful, and he and I will watch TV together, if I’m brewing he will come back and sit in his chair and watches me brew the whole time,” Charles told WPTV in West Palm Beach.
