Mama Coco and Kitten Chanel Survived By Eating Grass, Now Have It All Indoors

March 23, 2022

Just as humans do, cats often need the gift of time — the time to heal, to experience kindness. This is certainly the case for mama kitty Coco and her five kittens who were all living behind a warehouse in Ontario, Canada. They were discovered on a cold morning earlier this year by a good samaritan, who contacted Cailey Seymour, the founder of Dorset Rescue Kittens.

The kind-hearted good samaritan immediately set down a plate of food for the small colony and everyone came scampering, happy to see the yummy food. For once the cats didn’t have to worry where their next meal was coming from and they made short work of all that good food. Right after that, the woman contacted Seymour, according to Love Meow.

“She sent me a photo of the kittens asking if we could take them,” Seymour says. “My answer was ‘absolutely.’ She was successful in catching all five kittens and their mom.”

Coco And Her Kittens Head To Safety

The mama kitty soon earned the name Coco. It’s thought that she’s around five years old, and when she and her kittens arrived at the shelter. rescuers realized she was just skin and bones. Obviously, her life on the streets was a harsh one.

“Coco spent her entire life on the streets as far as we know,” Seymour says. “We were worried that she was feral but that couldn’t be further from the truth.”

It took mama Coco a little time to get used to her new situation, but now that she is, she definitely isn’t looking back.

“Mama Coco has finally started to understand the concept of a home,” Cailey says. “At first she would only lay on the ground, never on a bed or couch. She loves attention but didn’t know how to seek it out.”

But the best part is that she’ll be a permanently indoor cat.

“She now looks for attention, lounges on beds and couches, and you can definitely tell she never wants to go outside again.”

That has to be the best news ever! She’ll be much safer indoors.

Mama Cat and kittens were scrawny and dirty and were dealing with upper respiratory infections. They were really in a bad way, poor babies. 😢

“It was apparent that they had been eating leaves and grass since there wasn’t food readily available to them,” Cailey told Love Meow.

Mama Soothes Her Little Ones

The situation with Coco’s kittens was a little slower going, to begin with, but with mom’s tender love and encouragement, they soon warmed up to human attention. The sweet grey-and-white tabby gently washed their little faces to help them feel safe. As for adorable Coco, she was learning she could love and trust her caregivers.

“She was leaning into love like she had been craving it her entire life,” Cailey said.

And her littlest waif really needed her mom. Coco’s rescuers were pleasantly surprised that this mama kitty was so resilient.

“Coco was so skinny I was shocked she even kept the babies alive till eight weeks, which was when we got them,” Cailey added. “We noticed that one of the babies, Chanel, was smaller and quieter than the rest.”

Tiny Chanel Needed Mom’s Help

The beautiful little ball of white fur was the tiniest in the litter and she needed extra time and love from her mom. InspireMore reports. Even after all her brothers and sisters were weaned, little Chanel clung to her mom because nursing was such a comfort to her. And mama Coco didn’t mind at all. A deep and unbreakable bond developed between this mother cat and her little one.

“She’s been a wonderfully attentive mom and dotes on Chanel,” Cailey said. “Chanel is often her mom’s mini shadow, but as she has grown, she has really opened up and has quite the personality.”

Coco is definitely the laid-back type who has discovered the joy of taking naps in soft, comfy places, while Chanel has turned into one lively little kitten. In their foster home, she’s discovering more places to explore. And like most kittens, one of her favorite hobbies is waking up mom. And their bond continues to deepen, and the rescue decided this beautiful mama and baby must be adopted together. Especially as this friendly little one loves to follow her mom around the house and keep Coco on her toes.

That’s even though mom prefers to chill.

“Coco on the other hand prefers to kick back and relax. She enjoys love from humans, especially a good neck scratch and belly rub.

But Coco is one mama kitty with a lot of room for her tiny companion, whom she clearly adores.

“You can always find these two lovelies curled up next to each other or Chanel running about and mama Coco following right hehind.”

For these two kitties, the best was soon to come — they found their furever home where they can be happy for the rest of their lives. I love these kinds of happy endings. I wish all cats were this lucky but I’m glad Coco will never have to feel the cold again and both cats will be safe in a loving home.
