Rescue Dog ‘used as breeding machine’ thrown out of moving van after getting too old
April 19, 2022
While walking down a street in Middlesex, England, a pedestrian witnessed something truly horrific: a dog being thrown out of the window of a moving van. They rushed over to the poor black pug and took her to a nearby shop for an examination before calling the RSPCA.
Peggy, the sweet little pug, was rushed to a local vet, who determined that while she had no injuries from her ordeal, she was in very bad shape from whatever situation she’d come from. She was emaciated, with missing patches of fur, and it was obvious that she had been used to breed litter after litter until her frail body could no longer do it.
In a press release, iz Wood, deputy manager at the RSPCA’s Millbrook Animal Center, said:
“Mentally, she was scarred as well, as evidenced by the sadness in her eyes — God only knows what she’d been through for the majority of her young life. I believe she was kept as a breeding machine to produce puppies in large numbers that could be sold. Then, when she reached the end of her useful life, they tossed her out like garbage. It’s heartbreaking and reprehensible to treat a dog as if it were a disposable item.”
Peggy’s rescuers, terrified and defeated, knew it would take time and a lot of TLC for her to recover. With this in mind, Wood made the decision to adopt her and become her foster home.
Peggy is gradually regaining her trust in people, accompanying Wood to the shelter every day and returning home with her every night. Wood stated,
“Now we’re starting to see her sassy side. When she wants food, she barks, and when she is pleased to see you, she makes funny little grunting noises — her whole body wags, it’s adorable! She’s a wonderful dog who will make an excellent companion for someone.”
Once Peggy has fully recovered, it will be time for her to find her forever home, and the RSPCA is extremely pleased with her progress thus far! They’re still looking into who might have done it, and they’ll keep fighting puppy farms and backyard breeding in general.
Wood came to this conclusion:
“This is why we need stricter regulations on dog breeding and sales, and we are hopeful that the government’s proposals to introduce licensing and new regulations will help. We’re also urging people to consider adopting a dog like Peggy rather than purchasing a puppy. Thousands of wonderful dogs in all shapes and sizes, with a variety of stories and backgrounds, are waiting for their forever home at the RSPCA.”
