A Blind And Deaf Dog Had To Be Put Down After Her Cruel Owner Left Her Living In Her Own Faeces And Riddled With Parasites

A man from Adelaide has escaped an immediate jail sentence for failing to seek vet treatment for a blind and deaf dog suffering from multiple painful medical conditions.
Geoffrey Mortensen pleaded guilty to two counts of ill-treating an animal in Elizabeth Magistrates Court for failing to mitigate the harm suffered to his Fox Terrier cross named Brandy.
The dog was found to have an enlarged eye, an ingrown and infected toenail causing an abscess, advanced dental disease, ear infections, and roundworm infestation when the RSPCA seized it from Mortensen’s property in 2017.
Chief veterinarian Brad Ward said in a statement to the court that if the conditions had suffered untreated, Brandy would have been in excruciating pain for a long time.
On Tuesday, Magistrate Brian Nitschke sentenced Mortensen to just over six months in prison, but suspended the sentence and placed him on a two-year good-behavior bond.
He also told the 54-year-old that he couldn’t own any animals until further notice.
Brandy’s level of neglect, according to RSPCA chief inspector Andrea Lewis, was among the worst she had ever seen.
‘This was an older dog, blind, deaf, and completely vulnerable, who had been completely abandoned by her owners at a time when she most needed them,’ Ms Lewis said.
Brandy was euthanized due to her poor prognosis.
