Woman Spots Cat Stranded on Island on Social Media, Sets out in Her Kayak

March 26, 2022

A bob-tailed cat later named Kayak was stranded on a tiny island in the Saginaw River in Michigan. The island was little more than a small thatch of trees with little room to move around, but the cat survived hiding out inside a hollow tree. Nobody knows how the cat got there. Did someone dump the cat on the island? Did he swim?

Fortunately, someone spotted the cat and posted about it on social media, where a kind woman named Elyssa Weber spotted it. Remarkably, as soon as she saw the story, she knew she would be the person to save this cat. A kayaker, she would paddle out to the thatch of trees and see what she could do.

“Instantly my heart just thumped a million miles an hour. I knew that I just had to go out there,” Weber told WNEM.

So, Weber ventured out to the island, but the cat evaded capture the first night. Undeterred, she returned the next day with live traps.

“The next morning, we went back to get the cat and kitty was there! So, we strapped him to the front of the kayak and took him inland,” Weber said.

Soon, the kitty took a ride across the river and found himself at the Humane Society of Bay County, who dubbed him Kayak. Then, another kind person would take him into foster care.

“He seems to be a stray or an unwanted cat. But now he is wanted and loved, which is a great thing. That’s what matters most to me,” Weber said.

🏝 More Kitties on the Tiny Island?🏝

Initially, Kayak wasn’t too happy about being around people. Who knows how long he was out there surviving on the island or how he got there in the first place? However, he was soon learning that his rescuers were kind and loving.

“He is very scared. But he’s starting to warm up. So, I’m very happy about that,” Weber said.

According to MNEM TV5, Weber suspected there were more kitties on the teeny tiny island. So, she would later return to see if she could save them too!

Once Kayak went to foster care, he soon learned to trust and warm up to people. First, his foster mom treated him with a squeeze-up for cats.

“Kayak likes the squeeze ups, me? he doesn’t like so much yet.”
